A 28 year veteran of the Austin Texas Police Department, Lieutenant Doug Dukes retired and now devotes his attention to studying Old West, a lifelong passion, as well as writing Western nonfiction.  His interest and expertise naturally revolves around frontier era law enforcement.  Doug’s articles have appeared in historical publications, such as, the Wild West History Association Journal; Wild West, and True West Magazines, and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum’s online chronicle, The Texas Ranger Dispatch.  Mr. Dukes’ book Ben Thompson: Iron Marshal of Austin, published in 2010, spotlighted the career of gambler and gunfighter Ben Thompson and his tenure as City Marshal with Austin Police Force.  During 2014 Doug was especially honored with selection as a Laureate for the Ranger Museum in Waco.  He is now working with other museum Laureates and staff members as a consultant for their ongoing efforts designed to preserve and promoted Texas Ranger history.  Frequently called upon as a public speaker for interested civil groups, Doug also has also appeared in several television documentaries concerning Old West Lawmen and their life and tools.  In 2019, Doug was named to the Board of Directors of The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, Texas. In 2020, Doug published his greatly anticipated book, “Firearms of the Texas Rangers From the Frontier Era to the Modern Age”. This book is available at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco Texas, The Alamo, as well as in Amazon and  major book stores near you. This book is also available from Doug personally.
